ETHICAL PERSPECTIVE ON EDUCATION WITH AI

Artificial Intelligence is a big topic right now and will have a great impact on our future. This is the reason why we decided to dig a little deeper into the topic. How do humans collaborate with Artificial Intelligence and “Does Artificial Intelligence make education for young people more effective?’’. If we want to answer this research question, we have to take a look at the ethical perspective on Artificial Intelligence. AIs have been developed so much over the past few years that we could replace teachers with AIs in the future without the students having trouble understanding. However, this new development rises ethical questions. Is replacing teachers with AIs good or bad, and is this ethically correct?

One of the things that AIs do not neccesarely need to have, but teachers do, are emotions. A teacher may become angry, tired or upset if a student asks the same question over and over again. The same thing occurs, when a student has not done his homework once again. A teacher may lose his temper and become frustrated. To an AI, emotions are no big issue: it could just turn them off, and does therefore not have favorite and least favorite students. It would simply perform the tasks like teaching, handing out homework and answering questions. This is a positive aspect of teaching with AI and it is definitely more fair for the students when the teacher treats every student equally under the same circumstances.

In contrast to the previous paragraph, we lay the future of our world in the programmers´ hands. If those purposely create an AI that discriminates students for example, this could cause serious issues and will not be tolerated since it is not ethically correct. This would not even need to be done on purpose, it could only be the fact that AIs have another definition of what is wrong and what is right. This means that when AIs do not feel any empathy, they will not fully see what a student feels or what the student tries to say. The robots will not be able to recognize if a student is frustrated. AIs can have a large effect on the behaviour of the children in the classroom.

We all know that today, knowledge is probably the greatest power. If AIs would at some point be superior than humans, they could easily manipulate us through education. Nevertheless, many experts doubt that Artificial Intelligence will ever have the control over us.

Another aspect that is worth looking at, are responsibilities. Whose fault is it when an AI teaches false information? Is it the government's fault, the programmers or the machine’s itself ? And how do we deal with conflicts between an AI and a student? Do AIs have the same rights as humans do? Do they even think like us and do they know what is wrong and what is right ? It is very hard answering those questions since Artificial Intelligence does not yet exist as such. Nowadays we have advanced computing and search algorithms but you have to think critically because AI might be a threat to us humans in the future.

To conclude, Artificial Intelligence will stay on the ethically correct side as long as programmers give it a clear definition of what is wrong and what is right to us humans. Otherwise, it might cause big problems and could manipulate us in some ways.
